30 Day Film Challenge: Day 23 – Your Favorite Thriller/Mystery Film: Touch Of Evil (1958)

Surprise, surprise, I’m not picking an Alfred Hitchcock film!

Day 23 – Your Favorite Thriller/Mystery Film

Touch Of Evil (1958, Orson Welles)

Police Captain Hank Quinlan is a s sleazy as they come, but he’s an absolute joy to watch. Orson Welles could be accused of chewing up the scenery, but he inhabits Quinlan so completely and effortlessly that his performance is far too organic to ever be chewy. The mystery or thrill in Touch Of Evil isn’t in the story, it is a great story though, but in just how corrupt Quinlan is. What he did in the past, what he’s doing at any given moment and what he might do in the future, it’s thrilling, it’s all so gosh darn thrilling. I’m still not sure how Mr. Welles, as the director, was able to create such a thrilling ride out of watching such an obviously headed for a fall character, but he did and I’m all the better because of it.

Cheers,
Bill
