The Gist

Big Will and Sam, or The Samurai, are the hosts of The Gentlemen’s Guide To Midnite Cinema, a podcast that has been around since 2008. Released on a weekly basis the episodes of the podcast usually range from an hour and forty five minutes to two hours plus. The hosts are from different parts of the world, Canada and the Southern United States, but they, along with an accompaniment of guests, come together to delve deep into the world of B movies, midnite cinema, and every genre under the massive umbrella of the word cinema. The episodes usually follow a basic format of a what we’ve been watching segment, an in-depth discussion of the main films of the episode, and if there is time a listener feedback segment.

My Thoughts

I love film, I believe I may have told everyone that at some point in time. One of the things I am looking for in this meandering project of mine is for film related podcasts that put forth a pure love of film. This isn’t a prerequisite mind you, there are a few podcasts I like that take a purely analytical approach to film. However, on the whole the podcasts that capture my attention are more inclined towards showing an enthusiastic love of film. The Gentlemen’s Guide To Midnite Cinema is a podcast that loves film, and it’s hosts bring a joy to discussing film that borders on glee.

It’s rare for a podcast to combine said glee, joy, and enthusiasm with a well rounded knowledge of film. I can safely state that The Gentlemen’s Guide To Midnite Cinema is a podcast that combines all of those elements and it may be why I loved discovering the podcast so much. There is an openness to the way that the two hosts, and by extension their podcast, approach film that represents the way I wish more people would approach film. I’m including myself in that grouping, because I know that I would be better off if I invested more of my time into looking for the aspects I like of every film I watch instead of focusing on the negative aspects. The Gentlemen’s Guide To Midnite Cinema doesn’t like every movie that is on the show, but they do approach all the films they discuss in an open manner that is much appreciated.

The energy, love, and knowledge that Big Will and Sam bring to The Gentlemen’s Guide To Midnite Cinema drew me in to every episode. I will admit that I did feel the length of some of the episodes. That is the only real negative I have about the podcast, and it’s not a big one. While it is technically a negative the length didn’t affect me that much simply because I rarely have the time to sit for a two hour stretch listening to a podcast.

The Gentlemen’s Guide To Midnite Cinema is a tremendous podcast, that’s why I had a wealth of positive things to say about the podcast (and for the sake of balance one negative). I don’t, however, want to slight the podcast by pigeonholing the hosts or their podcast into liking or discussing a certain type of cinema. There’s no doubt that the tastes of The Gentlemen’s Guide To Midnite Cinema run more towards the obscure or cultish. That being said they will cover major releases or classics that made a lot of money or were well received critically in their day. That’s why I don’t want to pigeonhole Big Will or Sam, they present a podcast that is about the simple joy of watching and discussing cinema. They love B movies, foreign films, Hollywood classics, and everything in between. Keep that in mind when subscribing to The Gentlemen’s Guide To Midnite Cinema, because if you love cinema and you love being a part of joyful discussions of cinema then there’s no reason you shouldn’t be listening to The Gentlemen’s Guide To Midnite Cinema.
