This Week In Cinema: May 27-June 02, 2012

I could not deliver death messages, I doubt I’d be able to hold my composure!

A lone movie this week,

The Messenger (2009, Oren Moverman, United States Of America) ***

Maybe it was the distance that the characters emote throughout The Messenger, but I found myself having a hard time connecting with this film. Its themes are strong, the acting is fantastic, and the direction is serviceable at worst and haunting in its best moments. As should be expected it is the moments when the two leads must deliver their bad news that the true power of the film pours out. The rest of the film has a restrained nobility about it, but I’ll be damned if I didn’t have a hard time connecting with the proceedings.

Wrap-Up:

Obviously there’s not much for me to say this week. When I only watch one movie then that movie is clearly going to be the movie of the week. So, yeah, The Messenger takes home movie of the week honors. Until next week, watch more movies! (Odin knows I’ll try to watch more!)

Cheers,
Bill

  1. Mark Middlemas

Good assessment. This was a hard film to watch and enjoy, despite the solid performances and script. It made me think about an even darker side to the military experience (if that’s possible), so it was very much worth my time.

  2. Definitely a worthy movie, and I feel that if I revisit it in the distant future I may appreciate it even more.
