A hot night in Detroit indeed!
Only one movie this week,
Burn (2012, Tom Putnam & Brenna Sanchez, United States of America) ***
Burn is a film that is full of real moments. Various Detroit Firefighters open up and reveal why they do what they do and how their career choice has impacted them. Tom Putnam and Brenna Sanchez falter the most when they veer away from the men, and scant women, who are their subjects. When they turn to the politics and bureaucracy of the Detroit Fire Department the film loses itself. It’s not that the issues the film tackles are not worthy of exploration, rather it is that the film doesn’t explore said issues thoroughly enough. Burn asks a series of questions then gives the question the bare minimum of attention before moving on to another question without providing any sort of answer or stop point. It’s not that Burn is a badly made film, it’s that it is needlessly incoherent.
Wrap-Up:
Only one film this week, so very obviously Burn takes home movie of the week honors. Until next week, watch more movies!
Cheers,
Bill Thompson
