I am a fan of the absurd and I am also a fan of movies that remember how wonderful the imagination can be. Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is a giant trip into the imagination of someone who still thinks like a child. Tim Burton and the character of Pee-wee still think like children and that comes across in every frame of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. It isn’t a movie to be taken seriously, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is a movie to wonder and laugh at. Whether it is the amazing breakfast cooking contraption, the awesome bike, the trip through the Warner Brothers lot, or the movie version of Pee-wee, every facet of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is a fun trip through the vivid imagination of people who still understand how interesting a child’s mind can be.
There isn’t much negative in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, only the basic comedy pitfalls of a few scenarios or jokes falling flat. Otherwise it is a wonderfully eccentric cast, great locales, and a completely preposterous lead that ends up capturing your attention and making you care about his journey. Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is a vibrant film, with beautiful coloring and imagery. Part of the imagination is how full of life it can be compared to the drab real world around all of us. Pee-wee’s Big Adventure gets that part of the human imagination down to a T, because Pee-wee’s world comes across like a fascinating place to visit.
Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is yet another cult status film, but it shouldn’t be a cult film. It’s message is very similar to that of Finding Neverland, but the difference is that whereas Finding Neverland is grounded in reality Pee-wee’s Big Adventure takes place in a far out imaginary world for its entirety. Pee-wee’s Big Adventure should connect with all audiences, child and adult, its themes are timeless and its comedy is endlessly funny. If you happen to possess an active imagination or are looking for a fun movie then Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is the film for you.
